Learn how to tie-dye socks in this easy, step-by-step guide! With just a few simple supplies, you can create beautiful tie-dyed socks that will add a little bit of personality to your sock drawer.

Let’s get started!

Tie-Dye Supplies

Before you can tie-dye your socks, you need to grab a few simple supplies.

Here’s what you’ll need for this project.

  • fiber-reactive dye in assorted colors
  • cotton socks. Look for at least 70% cotton for the best results.
  • soda ash (you may or may not need this, depending on the type of dye you purchase)
  • Synthrapol, or another laundry detergent
  • rubber bands or strong string
  • squeeze bottles, to apply dye
  • plastic tablecloths or large trash bags to protect your work surface
  • wire rack to elevate the garment off the work surface, optional
  • gloves and a dust mask
  • zip-top bags or plastic wrap

What kind of socks can you tie dye?

You can tie-dye any socks you like, as long as they have a high percentage of cotton or other plant fibers – at least 70% cotton for the best results.

You probably won’t be able to find 100% cotton socks, and that’s okay. You can successfully dye 80/20 cotton/polyester blend or 70/30 cotton/polyester blend socks.

50/50 cotton/polyester blends will not absorb the dye well, and the colors will come out very pale.

Step 1: Prep the socks and your workspace.

Before starting the tie-dye process, it is essential to prewash your socks using any suitable laundry detergent. This prewashing step is crucial as it helps eliminate any residual oil, dirt, or chemicals that may be present from the manufacturing process.

Afterward, prepare your workspace by covering your work surface with a plastic tablecloth or a large trash bag. If preferred, you can also use a wire rack to elevate the socks above the work surface.

Lastly, gather your rubber bands, squeeze bottles, and gloves.

Step 2: Mix your dyes and Soda Ash pre-soak.

Next, prepare a soda ash pre-soak by combining 1 cup of soda ash with 1 gallon of warm water. Stir the mixture until the soda ash is completely dissolved. Proceed to soak your socks in this soda ash pre-soak for a duration of 15-20 minutes. This step holds significance as it facilitates the bonding process between the dye and the fabric.

Once the designated time has elapsed, carefully squeeze out any excess soda ash solution from the socks.

Step 3. Fold and tie your socks.

Proceed to fold the socks and secure them with string or rubber bands. If the socks are still damp with the soda ash solution, it is advisable to wear gloves while folding them.

There are numerous techniques to tie up your socks, allowing for a variety of designs. You can opt for a simple spiral pattern, an accordion fold, or even scrunch them up randomly. This is an opportunity to unleash your creativity!

Step 4: Apply the dye.

Once you have successfully tied up your socks, it is time to begin applying the dye.

Take the squeeze bottles and utilize them to apply the dye onto the socks. You have the freedom to apply the dye in any pattern of your preference. Additionally, feel free to explore various techniques such as dabbing or spraying to create unique effects and designs.

Step 5. Let the dye set.

After completing the dye application process, allow the socks to rest and allow the dye to react with the fabric.

To prevent the socks from drying out, carefully place them inside a plastic bag. Leave the bag in a warm location for a minimum of 8 hours. For more vibrant and vivid colors, it is recommended to let the dye set for at least 24 hours.

Step 6. Rinse, wash, and wear your new socks.

Once the dye has fully set, it is time to proceed with rinsing and washing your socks.

Begin by taking the socks out of the plastic bag and thoroughly rinse them under cold water until the water runs clear.

Next, wash the socks in hot water using a gentle detergent for optimal results.

Finally, either tumble dry the socks on a low heat setting or allow them to air dry.
